End of Bullying Begins with Me
“The End of Bullying Begins with Me!” that’s the message behind National Bullying Prevention Month. What started off as a week-long event in October, 2006 has now grown into a month-long effort to actively prevent bullying. From school-wide events, to small acts of kindness, we can all do something to show someone that they are not alone. Bullying occurs in many forms, including physical, emotional, and cyber bullying. Cyber bullying runs rampant in schools and the worst part is that students can’t escape it when they go home due to the constant connection to social networks. Victims of bullying suffer many consequences including depression, which can lead to suicide, drug use, anxiety, and poor school attendance and performance. In fact, suicide is the number three cause of death in young adults in the U.S., and at least half of suicides in young adults have been linked to bullying. If you know someone in our schools who is bullying or being bullied, you have the responsibility to tell an adult, fill out a bullying form which you can get from a teacher, or be a friend. When you’re aware of cyber bullying that’s happening around you, it’s also important to save, screenshot, or print off any messages or conversations. It never hurts to go out of your way to be kind to people, and you may just save a life.
